Road Tripping The North Island: Places To See & Visit
New Zealand is, very rightly, known as a beautiful country with numerous tourist destinations and activities spread across the two islands. The North Island is quite famous among tourists for road trips, particularly starting from the capital city of Wellington and travelling up the country to the Far North.
On this road trip you will take in some major tourist stops, including Taupo, Rotorua, Waitomo and Auckland. You can begin your road trip by hiring a car in Wellington
and returning your rental to Auckland. Along the way you will take in some of the sights and sounds of rural areas, coastal towns and big cities that make up the diverse landscape of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand and home toTe Papa - New Zealand’s national museum. This a must see for both visitors and locals and exhibitions change frequently. Te Papa is located on the Wellington waterfront and entry to the museum is free.
One of the other most popular activities in the city is to take a trip in the Cable Car. It allows you to enjoy exceptional harbour views and you can walk down from the cable car through the Botanical Gardens to the City. Driving North out of Wellington takes you through the spectacular Kapiti Coast area where you can enjoy nature walks and access to miles of unspoiled beaches. Continuing North takes you to through the Tongariro National Park and the Desert Road where you will see huge mountain ranges and volcanoes. From here, you can continue your journey to Taupo.
Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand. It takes about one hour to drive around the lake. The lake was formed hundreds of years ago from a huge volcanic eruption. Now it offers a wide range of water activities and there are many hotels, restaurants and shops surrounding the lake. You can also take a cruise on Lake Taupo or visit the popular Huka Falls and thermal pools.
The next step on your road trip will take you to Rotorua. It is considered New Zealand’s thermal wonderland. You can enjoy a Maori dinner with some cultural entertainment. You can also visit mud pools and the thermal geysers that make up the famous spots in Rotorua, including Wai-o-Tapu and Hell’s Gate. A lot of people take the Skyline Gondola to reach the top of Mount Ngongotaha. It allows visitors a stunning view of the city followed by an exciting ride to the bottom.
Waitomo caves have always been popular because of its beautiful underground limestone formations. You should not miss the silent boat journey through the famous glowworm grotto or you can take the adventurous route and enjoy the underwater river on a tube. The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Trilogies are filmed in and around Waitomo so if you are a movie buff be sure to take the opportunity to visit Middle Earth and Hobbiton while you are in the area.
Why not end your fascinating North Island road trip in the country’s most cosmopolitan and largest city, Auckland. Some of the popular attractions in the city include the Auckland Museum, Auckland Zoo and Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World and Antarctic Encounter. You can also reach the top of the Sky Tower for an exceptional view around the city. It allows you views of the harbour and the opportunity to test your nerves on the crystal clear glass floor level.
If you are feeling really adventurous then you can do a sky jump from one of the highest levels. For a more relaxing taste of Auckland why not take a harbour cruise to Devonport or Waiheke Island.
